Borderlands 2: Mechromancer DLC

By Melissa

As a thrifty gamer, when Borderlands 2 came out, I wanted it. Sadly, my wallet said no. When I got the opportunity to buy it on sale, I snatched it up. One of the things I was really interested in was the Gaige, the Mechromancer, and when I finally got Borderlands 2, I sprung for the Mechromancer DLC too and I haven’t regretted it for a second.

Gaige’s back story is hilarious. As a brilliant little maniac, she built a robot for her school science fair, to end bullying in schools, which is a noble cause, right? Well due to a miscalculation, when one of Gaige’s classmates shoved her, the robot detected a threat and to make a long story short, her classmate exploded. In order to avoid murder charges, she flees to Pandora and that’s where the fun begins.

To put it bluntly, I suck at first person shooters, but that doesn’t stop me from playing them but Gaige’s abilities fit me perfectly and it’s fucking fun as hell. Her ability is to summon her science fair robot, named Deathtrap, and it is so appropriately named. It is fast, races around and slaughters everything in its path. Not to mention if you are downed and deathtrap kills something, you get a second wind. Thanks, robot!

Right now, I’m playing an ordered chaos build, which is amazing. You have a skill called Anarchy, which increases your damage by 1.75% but decreases your accuracy by 1.75%. Seems like it could be cool, but is it worth it? Fuck yeah. Since Anarchy initially can stack up to 150 times, which adds up to a phenomenal 262.5% increase to damage and your accuracy goes to shit. With the right build you can end up with the ability to have 300 stacks of Anarchy, which is insane. You earn Anarchy stacks by killing an enemy, or having to reload your weapon in combat. With a single-shot shotgun (my weapon of choice) you earn Anarchy stacks quickly and when you do manage to hit something, it just explodes. Since my aim is pretty shitty anyway, this is just perfect to compensate for my lack of skill. However, I end up charging at enemies like a maniac and trying to shoot them at point blank range, which increases the likelihood of actually hitting your target. One-shotting a Bad-ass enemy is an awesome feeling. Anarchy can be easily lost though, which is rage inducing to say the least. If you reload your gun prematurely, your Anarchy counter zips back down to zero and a string of profanities fly from my mouth. You lose Anarchy slower when downed so if you can catch a Second Wind fast enough, you can retain some of your stacks.

Gaige’s other builds utilize Deathtrap to help replenish your shields and to act as a tank or you can focus on elemental damage. I haven’t tried either of these specs yet because I’m having fun doing as much damage as possible, even if I miss pretty often.

Plus Gaige is fucking adorable: with her pigtails, wearing goggles and carrying a lunchbox (your class mod) she’s just the type of character I would want to play and her personality is funny. There have been times where I have maxed out my Anarchy and I’m sitting there hoping I don’t fuck it up and accidentally reload and then she says “Please don’t accidentally reload! Please don’t accidentally reload!” in a panic. Some of her other quips make me giggle like nonsensical words and sound effects. She’s a quirky lil’ firecracker and accuracy is overrated anyway, right?

To best sum it up, check out this video of Gaige in action.

She’s even cuter with the head you get from the sidequest in Opportunity, or better yet, the adorable ringlet curls from the head you get when you beat the Pirate DLC. Can’t agree more that she’s adorable!
